Why Add a Watermark to a PDF?
A watermark tells the reader what a document is before they read a word. DRAFT warns that the text is not final, CONFIDENTIAL asks people not to share it, and your company name on a quote or a design proof shows where it came from. A light watermark across the page also makes it harder to reuse a document without permission.
How to Add a Watermark to a PDF
- Press Choose a PDF file and pick your document.
- Type the watermark text, for example DRAFT.
- Set the font size, the opacity, the angle and the color. A light gray at 30 percent works well for most documents.
- Choose one watermark in the center or a repeated pattern across the page.
- Press Add watermark and download. Your file is saved as the original name followed by -watermarked.
What the Tool Does
- Adds your text to every page of the PDF.
- Lets you pick the size, color, opacity and angle.
- Can repeat the text in a pattern or place it once in the center.
- Handles pages that are turned sideways, so the watermark reads correctly as you see the page.
- Saves a new file and leaves your original untouched.
Good to Know
- The watermark is drawn on top of the page content, so use a low opacity if you want the text underneath to stay easy to read.
- It supports English letters, numbers and common symbols. Other alphabets are not supported in this tool.
- The watermark becomes part of the page. It cannot be removed with this tool afterwards, so keep your original file.
- Password protected PDFs cannot be opened by the tool. Remove the password in your PDF viewer first.
- Each file can be up to 100 MB.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tool free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no sign-up. The only watermark added is the one you type.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The PDF is read and changed in your browser and is not sent to our servers.
Can I use my logo as a watermark?
Not yet. This tool adds text only. For a logo, use an image editor or a PDF editor.
Can I put the watermark on only some pages?
Not in this tool. It marks every page. You can first cut out the pages you need with Split PDF or Delete and Reorder PDF Pages.
What is the best opacity for a watermark?
Between 20 and 40 percent in a light gray is a good start. It is easy to see but does not hide the text underneath.
