What Is a PDF Splitter?

A PDF splitter takes one PDF and divides it into smaller files. You might want a single chapter from a long report, one invoice from a bundle of scans, or every page saved as its own file. This free split PDF tool lets you choose exactly which pages to keep and gives you the result straight away.

How to Split a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF file. The tool shows how many pages it has.
  2. Pick a mode: extract pages into one new PDF, split each range into its own PDF, or save every page as a separate PDF.
  3. Type the pages or ranges, such as 1-3, 5, 8-10, then press Split PDF and download your files.

The Three Split Modes

Extract pages into one new PDF

Type the pages you want and they are copied into a single new PDF, in the order you wrote them. Writing 1-3, 8 gives you a four page file.

Split each range into its own PDF

Every comma separated range becomes its own file. Typing 1-3, 4-6, 7 creates three PDFs. When you ask for more than one file, they are downloaded together in one ZIP.

Save every page as a separate PDF

One PDF is created for each page and all of them are downloaded in a ZIP file. This is handy for scans where every page is a separate document.

Why Use a Browser Based PDF Splitter?

Many online splitters ask you to upload your document to a server. Here the work happens on your own device, which is a good fit for contracts, forms and anything private. It also means you do not wait for an upload or download of the original file.

Limits to Know About

  • Password protected or encrypted PDFs cannot be opened by this tool.
  • Very large files depend on the memory of your device, and files above 150 MB are not accepted.
  • The pages are copied as they are. The file is not compressed or edited, so the size of the new file depends on the pages you keep.
  • Form fields, bookmarks and links that connect different pages of the original may not be kept in the new files.
  • This tool splits PDFs only. It does not merge, compress or edit them.

Tips for Better Results

Check the page numbers in your PDF viewer first, since the number printed on a page can differ from its position in the file. This tool always uses the position, where the first page is 1. After splitting, open the new file to confirm it has the pages you expected. If you need to convert a PDF to an editable document afterwards, try the PDF to Word converter.
