What this tool does not do
This is a rule-based checker for formatting mistakes. It does not check grammar, spelling or sentence structure the way a full grammar tool would, and it does not fix issues for you. It will not tell you whether a comma belongs in a particular place, so for important documents have a person proofread as well. Pair it with the Spell Check tool for a more complete review.
Punctuation mistakes worth knowing
- Comma splice: joining two full sentences with just a comma. Use a full stop, a semicolon or a conjunction instead.
- Its and it’s: its shows possession, it’s means it is.
- Missing comma after an introductory phrase, as in: After lunch, we left.
- Inconsistent quotation marks: pick straight or curly quotes and stay with them.
- Too many exclamation marks: one is enough for emphasis.
Common uses
- Proofread blog posts, essays and emails
- Catch missing periods and doubled spaces
- Polish product descriptions and web copy
- Improve clarity before sending a message to a client
