Check your text for spelling mistakes instantly, free and online. A simple tool to help you write error-free content.
About the Spell Checker
A single typo can weaken an otherwise strong page, email or application. This free spell checker compares every word in your text with an English dictionary of more than 150,000 words, including common plurals, verb forms and possessives. Words it does not recognize are flagged as possible misspellings and shown with suggested corrections.
How to use the Spell Checker
- Paste your text into the box.
- Click Check Spelling.
- Review each flagged word and the suggestions beside it.
- Correct the words in your original document and check again if needed.
How the suggestions are found
For each flagged word, the tool looks for dictionary words that are only a few edits away, meaning a few letters added, removed, swapped or changed. This edit-distance method is the same idea behind many spell checkers. Here are some mistakes it commonly catches:
| Common misspelling | Correct spelling |
|---|---|
| recieve | receive |
| definately | definitely |
| seperate | separate |
| occured | occurred |
| accomodate | accommodate |
What a spell checker cannot catch
A dictionary check finds words that do not exist, but it cannot tell when a real word is used in the wrong place. Their and there, your and you’re, affect and effect, or from and form all pass a spell check even when they are wrong. It may also flag proper nouns, brand names, technical terms and slang that are spelled correctly but are not in the dictionary. Use your judgment on each flagged word, and read the text once more yourself.
Proofreading tips
- Read your text aloud or backward, one sentence at a time, to spot errors your eye skips.
- Take a break before proofreading. Fresh eyes find more mistakes.
- Check names, numbers and dates by hand.
- Run the text through the Punctuation Checker as well for missing spaces and doubled marks.
- For long articles, check the text in sections so the results are easier to review.
Common uses
- Proofread blog posts and web pages before publishing
- Check emails, cover letters and CVs
- Review product descriptions and ad copy
- Double-check school and university assignments
Frequently asked questions
Does it catch every error?
No. It finds misspelled words but not correctly spelled words used in the wrong context, and it does not check grammar.
Why is a correctly spelled word flagged?
Proper nouns, brand names and uncommon words may not be in the dictionary, so they can be flagged even though they are correct.
Which language does it check?
The checker uses an English dictionary.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The dictionary loads once into your browser and all checking happens locally.
How does it compare with Microsoft Word?
It covers common English words and inflections well, but a full word processor may have a larger or more specialized dictionary and extra grammar checks.
