About the Text to Hex Converter
Hexadecimal, or hex, is a base-16 number system that computers and developers use as a compact way to write binary data. This text to hex converter turns any text into its hex byte values and turns hex back into readable text. Choose a direction, paste your content and press Convert. The result appears instantly and can be copied with one click.
How to use the Text to Hex Converter
- Choose Text to Hex or Hex to Text at the top of the tool.
- Type or paste your content into the box.

How text becomes hex
Every character on your keyboard has a numeric code defined by the ASCII standard. The converter looks up that number and writes it in hexadecimal. A single byte always needs exactly two hex digits, which is why the output comes in neat pairs. Take the word Hello:
| Character | Decimal code | Hex |
|---|---|---|
| H | 72 | 48 |
| e | 101 | 65 |
| l | 108 | 6c |
| l | 108 | 6c |
| o | 111 | 6f |
So Hello becomes 48 65 6c 6c 6f. Going the other way, 48 69 decodes to Hi. Uppercase and lowercase letters have different codes: A is 41 and a is 61. A space is 20, the digit 0 is 30 and a new line is 0a.
How hex works
Hex uses sixteen symbols: the digits 0 to 9 and the letters A to F, where A stands for 10 and F for 15. Each hex digit represents exactly four bits, so two hex digits describe one full byte. That is why developers prefer hex over long strings of ones and zeros. For a deeper explanation read our guide to hexadecimal numbers.
Where hex shows up in real life
- CSS and design colors such as #F5821F
- Percent-encoded characters in web addresses, where a space becomes %20
- Hash values and checksums, for example from our MD5 Generator
- Memory addresses, MAC addresses and debugging output
- Network packets, file headers and encoded tokens
Tips for accurate conversion
- When converting hex to text, give complete pairs of digits. Each pair is one character.
- Spaces between pairs are optional. Both 48 65 6c 6c 6f and 48656c6c6f work.
- Only 0 to 9 and A to F are valid. Letters can be uppercase or lowercase.
- The converter works with standard text characters. Some special or multi-byte Unicode characters may not round-trip the same way in every hex tool.
- Hex is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide sensitive data.
Frequently asked questions
What does the hex value 48 mean?

How many hex digits does one character need?
A standard ASCII character takes one byte, which is exactly two hex digits.
Can I convert hex back to text?

Why does my hex fail to decode?
Check that you have an even number of hex digits and that no characters outside 0 to 9 and A to F are present. The tool shows an error message when the input is invalid.
