About the MD5 Generator

MD5, short for Message Digest Algorithm 5, turns any piece of text into a fixed-length fingerprint of 32 hexadecimal characters. This MD5 generator calculates that hash for the text you type or paste. The same input always produces the same hash, and even a tiny change in the input produces a completely different result, which makes MD5 useful for comparing data and spotting accidental changes.

How to use the MD5 Generator

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Click Generate MD5 Hash.
  3. Copy the 32-character hash with the Copy Hash button.

Examples

MD5 is case sensitive, so Hello and hello produce entirely different hashes. Adding a space or a full stop changes the result too. That sensitivity is exactly what makes hashes useful for detecting changes.

What MD5 is used for

  • Comparing two pieces of text or data without revealing the content
  • Checking that a download or a copied block of data has not been corrupted
  • Creating short identifiers for cache keys, database lookups and deduplication
  • Teaching and testing: learning how hash functions behave

A security note

MD5 is fast and simple, but it is no longer considered secure. Researchers have shown how to create two different inputs with the same MD5 hash, called a collision, so it must not be used for digital signatures or for protecting passwords. For password storage use an algorithm designed for the job, such as bcrypt or Argon2. For integrity checks where security matters, SHA-256 is the usual choice. If you need a strong password in the first place, try our Password Generator.

Can an MD5 hash be reversed?

A hash is a one-way function, so you cannot mathematically decrypt it. However, because MD5 is so fast, attackers keep huge tables of hashes for common words and passwords, and a weak input can be found by looking it up. That is another reason never to rely on MD5 for anything sensitive.

Frequently asked questions

Is MD5 safe for passwords?

No. MD5 is too fast and has known weaknesses. Use bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 for passwords.

Will the same text always give the same hash?

Yes. MD5 is deterministic, so identical input always produces an identical 32-character hash.

How long is an MD5 hash?

Always 32 hexadecimal characters, which represent 128 bits.

What is the difference between MD5 and SHA-256?

SHA-256 produces a longer 64-character hash and has no known practical collisions, so it is preferred for security-related uses.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. The hash is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
