Roman Numeral Symbols
- I = 1
- V = 5
- X = 10
- L = 50
- C = 100
- D = 500
- M = 1000
The Rules
- Symbols are written from the biggest to the smallest and added together, so VIII is 5 + 3 = 8.
- A smaller symbol before a bigger one is subtracted. IV is 5 – 1 = 4, and IX is 10 – 1 = 9.
- Only I, X and C can be placed before a bigger symbol, and only before the next two bigger ones. For example, I goes before V and X, but not before L.
- A symbol is not repeated more than three times in a row. That is why 4 is IV, not IIII.
Where Roman Numerals Are Used
You will still see Roman numerals on clocks, in the names of kings and popes, in the years on buildings and films, in chapters of books, and in the names of events such as sports finals. Knowing how to read them helps when you meet an unfamiliar date such as MMXXVI, which is 2026.

What is the biggest number I can write?
This tool goes up to 3999, which is MMMCMXCIX. Bigger numbers need a bar over the letters, which is not part of the standard letters.
