How to Read Binary: A Step-by-Step Guide

Binary looks intimidating as a wall of 0s and 1s, but reading it is a mechanical, learnable skill — no calculator required once you know the pattern. Here’s how to do it by hand, one step at a time.

Step 1: Know the Place Values

Each position in a binary number is worth double the position to its right, starting from 1 on the far right: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and so on. This is the same idea as decimal place values (ones, tens, hundreds), just doubling instead of multiplying by ten.

Step 2: Line Up the Binary Digits With Their Place Values

Write the binary number above its place values, right to left. For the 8-bit number 01011010, that looks like:

0 1 0 1 1 0 1 0
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1

Step 3: Add Up Only the Positions With a 1

Ignore every position with a 0 — it contributes nothing. Add together the place values wherever there’s a 1. For 01011010: 64 + 16 + 8 + 2 = 90. That’s the decimal value of that binary number.

Step 4: Practice With a Few More

00000101 → 4 + 1 = 5

00010000 → 16

11111111 → 128+64+32+16+8+4+2+1 = 255 (the maximum value an 8-bit byte can hold)

Reading Binary as Text, Not Just Numbers
