What Is a Days Between Dates Calculator?
A days between dates calculator counts the time from one date to another. People use it to count down to a holiday, plan a project, check how long a contract has run, work out a notice period or find how old something is. The second calculator on this page does the opposite: it starts with a date and moves forward or back by the amount you choose.
How to Use the Calculator
- Choose a start date and an end date. The start date is filled in with today to save you time.
- Read the answer in days, in years, months and days, in weeks and days, and in weekdays.
- To find a future or past date, use the second calculator. Pick a start date, choose Add or Subtract, type an amount and choose days, weeks, months or years.
Should You Include the End Date?
By default the calculator counts the nights between the two dates, so Monday to Wednesday is 2 days. Tick Include the end date in the count if you want both the first and the last day to count, which makes the same example 3 days. Hotels and rentals usually count nights, while event schedules and leave requests often count every day.
How Months Are Handled
Months have different lengths, so adding one month to 31 January gives 28 February, or 29 in a leap year, the last day of the shorter month. The breakdown in years, months and days counts whole calendar months first and then the days that are left.
Limits to Know About
- Weekdays are Monday to Friday. Public holidays and local days off are not removed, because they differ by country.
- The calculator uses calendar dates only and does not include time of day or time zones.
- Dates must be between the years 0001 and 9999.
