What Is an Hours Calculator?
An hours calculator does the time arithmetic that is awkward to do in your head. Hours and minutes work in base 60, so 2 hours 45 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes is not 3 hours 75 minutes but 4 hours 15 minutes. This free hour calculator handles that for you, whether you want to find the time between two clock times, total a week of shifts, or add and subtract durations.
How to Calculate Hours Worked
- In the Time card tab, enter the start time and end time for each day you worked.
- Add the unpaid break in minutes, if there was one.
- Read the hours for each day and the total for the week, in hours:minutes and in decimal hours.
For example, 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30 minute break is 8 hours exactly. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30 minute break is 7 hours 30 minutes, because the end time is counted as the next morning.
How to Add or Subtract Hours and Minutes
Open the Add or subtract hours tab. Enter hours and minutes in each row and choose Plus or Minus. Press Calculate to get the total. For example, 2:45 plus 1:30 plus 3:50 is 8:05, and subtracting 1:20 leaves 6:45. You can add up to ten rows.
Hours and Minutes or Decimal Hours?
Time sheets and invoices often ask for decimal hours, where 30 minutes is 0.5 and 15 minutes is 0.25. The tool shows both formats side by side, so you can copy the one your form needs. To convert by hand, divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours.
Tips for Accurate Results
- Enter times on the same clock format. The time boxes use your device settings, so you may see AM and PM or a 24 hour clock.
- Enter breaks in minutes, not hours.
- If a day shows check break, your break is longer than the shift.
- Always compare the totals with your employer or contract rules before using them for pay.
