How to Use the Tip Calculator
- Type the bill amount.
- Type the tip percentage, or press one of the quick buttons such as 15% or 20%.
- If you are splitting the bill, type the number of people.
- Tick the box if you want each person to pay a whole number.
- Read the tip, the total and what each person pays. The results update as you type.
How Much Should You Tip?
Tipping customs depend on the country and the place. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is usual for table service. In many other countries a smaller tip, or a few coins, is normal, and in some places service is already added to the bill. If you are not sure, check your bill or ask the staff.
The Formula
Tip = bill times tip percent divided by 100. Total = bill plus tip. Each person pays the total divided by the number of people. With rounding turned on, each share is rounded up to the next whole number, so the tip becomes slightly bigger.
Good to Know
- The tip is worked out on the amount you type. If your bill includes tax and you want to tip on the amount before tax, type that amount instead.
- Splitting the bill equally is simple, but it may not be fair if people ordered very different things.
- The calculator works with any currency because it only uses numbers.
