How to Calculate a Discount

To find the amount you save, multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100. Subtract that amount from the original price to get the new price. For example, 20% off 100 is a saving of 20, so the new price is 80. If tax is charged after the discount, it is added to the discounted price, not to the original one.

How to Find the Discount Percentage

If you know the original price and the sale price, subtract the sale price from the original price, divide the result by the original price and multiply by 100. A jacket that used to cost 80 and now costs 60 has been reduced by (80 - 60) / 80 x 100 = 25%.

Adding and Removing Sales Tax or VAT

Adding tax

Multiply the price by the tax rate and divide by 100, then add it to the price. A 200 item with 15% tax costs 200 + 30 = 230.

Removing tax

When a price already includes tax, divide it by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. A 230 total that includes 15% tax comes from 230 / 1.15 = 200 before tax. Taking 15% off 230 would give the wrong answer, because the tax was worked out on the smaller amount.

Tips for Comparing Deals

  • Compare the final price, not just the percentage. 30% off a higher starting price can cost more than 20% off a lower one.
  • Two discounts do not add up. 20% off followed by 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%.
  • Check whether the displayed price includes tax before you compare shops or countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate 30 percent off?

Multiply the price by 0.30 to get the saving and subtract it from the price. Or multiply the price by 0.70 to get the new price in one step.

Is the tax added before or after the discount?

In most shops tax is charged on the discounted price. This calculator does the same. Rules differ between places, so check your receipt.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount as a decimal. A sale price of 60 after 25% off came from 60 / 0.75 = 80.
