If you want to keep a Facebook video to watch later, or keep a copy of something you made, you have probably noticed that Facebook makes this awkward. This guide explains the realistic official options and how to use them responsibly.
What “download Facebook video” really means
- Saving inside Facebook. The Save video option adds a post to your Saved items. The video stays on Facebook and nothing is stored on your phone.
- Downloading a file. This means getting an actual video file on your device. Facebook offers this for videos you uploaded, but not as a general button for other people’s videos.
- Backing up your account. Facebook lets you request a copy of your own information, including videos you posted.
How to save a video inside Facebook
- Open the video or post.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Save video.
- Find it later in Saved items, in the Facebook menu.
How to get a file of your own video
Open your video and check the three-dot menu for a download option. If you manage a Page, use Meta Business Suite: open your content list, select the video and look for the download option. After a live broadcast, Facebook usually offers a download of the recording, so do it before you forget. Wording differs between the app and the website.
Facebook treats videos as streaming content controlled by the person who posted them. For videos from friends, Pages and groups, the platform leaves out the download option on purpose. If you really need a copy, ask the owner to send you the original file. Screen recording captures what is on screen, but it does not change who owns the video, so the same rules about reuse apply.
Choosing the right option
- Want to watch later: use Save video.
- Need your own file: download it from your own upload or from Meta Business Suite.
- Need a full backup: use Download your information in Accounts Center.
- Need someone else’s video: ask them for the file.
Rules to follow
Being able to save a video does not give you the right to reuse it. Videos belong to the people who made them, so ask for permission before reposting, editing or using one in a project, and give clear credit. We do not link to third-party downloader websites: they often break platform rules, show aggressive ads and can put your device at risk.
